He’s happier than anybody and practices medicine the way he wants to. But I have this friend I went to med school with who operates a house call practice in Miami. They were only interested in numbers and productivity. "There was one that was looking for someone to take calls Monday through Friday with Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday being twenty-four hours. "A lot were pretty terrible," Paull recalls. Why Doctors Are Choosing House Call Medicineįrom dissatisfaction with the current healthcare employment landscape to the needs of particular patient populations, the physicians we spoke with choose to practice house call medicine for many different reasons.ĭaniel Paull, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and founder of Easy Orthopedics in Colorado Springs, Colorado, started his house call practice earlier this year after becoming disillusioned with the "standard positions" he was offered during his post-residency job search. We spoke with five of them to learn more about what it’s like to practice modern medicine in a good, old-fashioned way. But there are still physicians who choose to make house calls for patient education, diagnosis, and treatment. This practice model has since declined and, as of 2013, one survey found only 13 percent of family medicine doctors participate in it. As recently as 50 years ago, it was not uncommon for a physician-particularly one in a primary care specialty such as family medicine, internal medicine, or pediatrics-to regularly visit patients in their homes.
